Fixing Hair Color at Ashka Salon Spa

Fixing Hair Color

We all know someone who has had a “hair color oops” at some point in their life. Hair color mistakes happen. However, hair color is always adjustable to a certain extent. When fixing hair color, you have to work smart in order to get the best results with the least amount of damage. It’s so important to see a professional hair stylist so that you can get as close to your original end result as possible.

Color Correction by Jordan

Fixing Hair Color – Going Darker

If you have ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Wow I am way too light” you know the feeling of needing some depth in your life. Being “too light” can mean a multitude of things. If you want to be all over darker, your stylist may have to “fill” your hair because it has become too porous to hold on to color. Sometimes, some foils with a lowlight formula may do the trick as well.

Fixing Hair Color – Going Lighter

Sometimes hair color can take too dark. If this is the case, sometimes you just need some highlights to break it up and make you feel over all lighter. Other times, you may need to completely lighten your hair. Unfortunately, color DOES NOT lighten previously colored hair. Because of this, stylists need to use a lightening product. At Ashka Salon Spa, we use Aveda’s Enlightener. With the help of Olaplex, we are able to help protect your hair better during the lightening process.

Now, it’s important to remember that every Color Correction is completely dependent on the situation. Sometimes it is a lot of time and steps, other times the problem could be easily fixed quickly. Another big thing to remember when fixing hair color is that you may not get the end result you are looking for right away in one session. At Ashka Salon Spa, we are committed to keeping your hair in good condition above all else. You can always add on an olaplex treatment while fixing your hair color. Your stylist will be able to give you a good timeline for how long it may take to achieve your #HairGoals.

Fifty Shades of Grey: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Grey Hair

Grey Hair

Grey hair is something that everyone and every salon eventually has to deal with. And this is no different at Ashka Salon Spa. Some people remember finding their first grey hair at the yong age of 16. Other people are in their early 40s and barely have any at all. There really doesn’t seem to be a pattern to when you get grey or even how much. It isn’t dependent on specific thing as far as I can tell. Because it seemed to be such a mystery to me, I thought it would be fun to do some research on it. Here are 5 fun facts that you may not have known about grey hair.

Grey Hair

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Grey Hair

  1. Your ethnicity makes a difference in how quickly you go grey.
Caucasians tend to go grey first. Scientists aren’t exactly sure why, but then Asians and finally African Americans.
  2. The 50-50-50 rule
“Fifty percent of the population has about 50% gray hair at age 50,” says Dr. Anthony Oro, professor of dermatology at Stanford University. Normal aging is the primary cause of grey hair
  3. Diet is key To colored locks
It has been proven than a diet filled with all of your vital vitamins and nutrients leads to stronger, healthier hair. It has also been found that having a healthy diet actually helps keep the grey hair at bay longer.
  4. Stress never helps
While stress hasn’t been proven to be directly linked to grey hair growth, it has been seen they it cause you to lose hair faster. The more quickly you lose hair, the more of a chance you have that it could grow back grey.
  5. Pluck the greys away
There is a myth going around that if you pluck a grey hair, 2 will come back. However this is completely inaccurate. A Hair follicle is only able to grow one hair strand. No matter how many times you pluck a stubborn grey, it will only grow back as one. However, I still don’t recommend plucking them for your scalps sake.

I hope you found my research as interesting as I did!

LA Blondes: Blonding at it’s Finest

LA Blondes

“Blondes have more fun” is a common phrase and with all of these beautiful sunkissed trends that are popular, it’s making me think that it might be true. Evelyn, Mona, Jessica, and I recently took the class LA Blondes. Blonding hair is always tricky because blonde means so many different things to so many different people and that is just talking about tone. Technique and effect are a complete different conversation, but it is just as important.

LA Blondes Overview

LA Blondes

This class was taught by Alberto Rossell-Davis. He is the Director of Hair Color Sales and Education at Aveda. Through Aveda Color Education, he has created customized technical classes and business classes. I was excited to hear that his LA Blondes class was coming to the Royal Oak Aveda Institute. As soon as our manager mentioned it to us, we jumped on the opportunity.

One of the biggest things that Alberto wanted us to understand is being able to choose the correct techniques to achieve the desired results. He put up four different images and asked up to identify the correct blonding technique. While all of them looked like they would fall under a “Balayage” category, they all were achieved in very different ways. This can be confusing for clients when they see a picture that has been described as “balayage” online but in reality they need to get traditional highlights to get achieve the look they want alongside a shadow root.

LA Blondes Trend Alert: Strobing

A new trend that we learned about was called Strobing. You may have heard of strobing when it comes to makeup, aka extreme highlighting. Strobing the hair is when you using a highlighting technique all over the head and then once the hair has been  rinsed and properly glossed, you go back over it to brighten certain pieces. This gives it that extra bit of highlight, just like the makeup technique. You can use strobing to accentuate certain features like a client’s eyes.

After this class, I know it really opened my eyes to all the different ways to achieve a similar result. It has definitely changed the way that I look at my blonde clients now.

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂

Olaplex at Ashka Salon Spa

Olaplex

With social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest, it’s easier than ever to get sucked into wanting a dramatic hair change. While all big makeovers is always a process, with new products called “Bond-Builders”, you are able to make more progress with significantly less damage. There are multiple bond builders on the market nowadays. At Ashka Salon Spa, we have chosen to use Olaplex.

What is Olaplex?

Olaplex

There are two steps when it comes to Olaplex. No 1 is put into your color to begin to rebuild your bonds as your color is processing. This concentrated first salon step rebuilds broken disulfide bonds and begins the process of preventing damage and repairing hair. We can add this to highlights, all over colors, toners, anything you are getting done!

No 2 is put on at the shampoo bowl after we have rinsed your color. Our second salon step continues to rebuild and restore any remaining broken bonds ensuring the strongest, shiniest, and healthiest hair possible. And really, who doesn’t want strong, shiny, healthy hair?

Who is Using Olaplex?

It seems as though all I read in magazines now is how Olaplex is being used for all of these celebrity hair makeovers. A few celebrities who are known to have used it include, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Emily Blunt, and Jennifer Lopez. People are raving about this miracle product. If I could I would use it on every single one of my color clients.

When you pair Olaplex with some of Aveda’s Botanical Conditioning Treatments, I can guarantee healthy hair. Whether you have been going to Ashka Salon Spa for a long time, or it’s your first time with us, be sure to ask your stylist if Olaplex is right for you. Our stylists would love to give you the hair of your dreams.

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂

Dry Remedy Line

Dry Remedy Line

Dry Remedy is one Aveda’s many product lines. As the colder months approach, we all tend to notice the summer moisture disappearing. While we welcome boots and sweaters, we don’t want to sacrifice our soft, shiny hair! With Aveda’s Dry Remedy line, we might not have too.

What is Dry Hair?

I feel like I constantly hear people tell me about how dry their hair is. What really is dry hair though? Dry hair happens when your hair doesn’t get or maintain enough moisture. What most people tend to complain about is the fact that their hair doesn’t feel silky or that it is missing some of it’s shine.

Your hair is made of 3 layers: cuticle, medulla, and cortex.

When your hair is dry, the outermost layer actually starts to break down. This gives you the gritty texture that dry hair has. It also will dull the hair because the surface is no longer smooth so light doesn’t bounce off of it in the same way.

What is in the Dry Remedy Line?

Dry Remedy Line

Shampoo and Conditioner: Meant to nourish brittle hair using  Aveda’s patented deep-moisture complex featuring buriti oil leaving the hair soft and shiny.

Moisturizing Masque: This is a more intense version of the Dry Remedy Conditioner. You will use this once a week in place of your conditioner and let it sit on for about 5 minutes.

Daily Moisturizing Oil: This oil instantly moisturizes hair by 41%. It is 99.9% naturally derived and is the leave in treatment option for this line.

Sometimes it is hard to know if your hair is dry or damaged and what the real difference is between the two. Stop in for an appointment today so we can help figure out what is best for your hair!

Top 5 Hair Myths – Debunked or Proven True?

There are so many myths about everything that are floating around these days. It has become hard to know if you are truly helping yourself. Whether that means exercising, using the right products, or just eating the right things. While I am still trying to sort through all the information on other topics, I thought I could do my part by clearing up some common hair myths!

Hair Myths
Hair by Mona

Top 5 Hair Myths – Debunked or Proven True?

  1. Cutting your hair makes your hair grow.

    FALSE.

Hair grows from your follicle, inside your scalp. No outer interaction will have any effect on how your hair grows. However, if you keep up on regular trims, your hair will grow healthier and thicker. So that way, the next time you come in for a haircut, you don’t have to be worried that your hairdresser will want to take off an excessive amount of hair.

  2. If you pluck one grey hair, two grow back.

    FALSE.

No matter what, we cannot increase the amount of hair follicles that we have. This makes it impossible for more than one hair to come back after plucking. However, you still should avoid this because it can be damaging to your scalp and hair follicles. This habit may lead to potential bald spots in the future. To tame those pesky greys, call Ashka Salon Spa today to set up your regular hair color appointments.

  3. A cold rinse will add shine.

    TRUE.

By rinsing your hair with cold water right before you exit the shower, you are helping to seal your cuticle closed. When your cuticle is shut, your hair appears smoother. This gives light more surface area to bounce off of, making your hair appear shiner. Who doesn’t want shinier hair? If this isn’t enough shine for you, you can always pick up some of Aveda’s Light Elements Smoothing Fluid to add to your style.

  4. If you always use the same shampoo, it will eventually stop working for you.

    FALSE.

I have to admit, until I started doing my research for this blog, I completely believed this myth. If you were to look in my shower, you would see the multiple kinds of shampoo and conditioner (maybe a few stray bobby pins too) in there. However, I have been proven wrong! This is a total myth. I think I might have been just looking for some validity to my product problem!

  5. Unwashed hair is better for styling.

    TRUE.

I’m hoping this cleared somethings up for you and you are feeling more confident in your hair care journey!

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂

Aveda Artist Instagram Challenge

Aveda Artist Instagram Challenge Entry

Aveda is now holding a monthly Instagram contest called the Aveda Artist Instagram Challenge. This past month, Ashka Salon Spa set up a photoshoot for us to get images to enter into the competition. I teamed up with Kay to create my image. I was in charge of the hair, and Kay did the make up for me!

What is the Aveda Artist Instagram Challenge?

Aveda has been putting on this challenge for a little while now. Every month Aveda picks one or two hashtags as the inspiration. The winner is chosen by the Instagram posts with the most likes. If you win, you get the amazing opportunity to be flown out to Minneapolis to the Aveda Headquarters. There you get to do another photoshoot with the Global Artistic Team as your mentors for the shoot. Here is an example of what you win!

What Did I Do for the Aveda Artist Instagram Challenge?

The hashtags for the month of September are #EcliptingColor and #TextureTonic. Eclipting Color is Aveda’s signature coloring technique. I used that method to apply the dimensional smokey tones on my model’s ends.

When It came to styling, I was so excited to use Aveda’s new Texture Tonic. This is Aveda’s version of a “Sea Salt Spray” but instead of just using salt, they actually have put sugar in as well. This helps to create a natural, touchable, undone look! I curled her longer side with a 1/4 inch curling iron and then used my fingers to comb through it, while spraying the texture tonic.

I really wanted the focus to be on the hair so we went simple with the make up. Kay did a simple cool toned smokey eye to play up her beautiful blue eyes, without taking too much away from the hair! She did an amazing job and I absolutely love it.

I would appreciate it so much if you followed this link HERE, over to instagram and gave my photo a like to help me win this amazing opportunity!

Rosemary Mint – Feel Invigorated

Aveda believes that aroma plays such a huge part in experiences. I think certain smells can totally change the atmosphere from stressful to relaxing or even nostalgic. There are four main aroma categories that Aveda promotes: Beautifying, Stress-Fix, Shampure, and Rosemary Mint. In this blog we are going to focus on Rosemary Mint. Keep reading to learn more!

Rosemary Mint

What is Rosemary Mint?

Rosemary Mint’s keynotes are certified organic rosemary and peppermint with other pure flower and plant essences. Aveda claims this smell to be “invigorating”. To be completely honest, when I first heard this phrase, I was not entirely sure what it meant. I googled what the definition of invigorating was and what came up was:

adjective
  1. making one feel strong, healthy, and full of energy.

After reading the definition, I totally agree that it is epitome of invigorating. It is just such a fresh smell that I really cannot get enough of it!

What Products Can I Get That Are Rosemary Mint?

There are so many different Rosemary Mint products available! You can get shampoo and conditioner. There is also body lotion. Aveda’s only bar of soap has this aroma. But if you prefer to use an actually body wash, Aveda has that too! When I use any of the Rosemary Mint line, I love the almost tingly sensation you get from the peppermint in the products.

Recent Ashka Salon Spa has invested in diffusers for around the salon and spa. We have been use the Rosemary Mint Composition Oil in them to spread that amazing Aveda scent.

Rosemary Mint
Aroma Ingredients

One of my favorite compliments I ever receive is that I “smell like Aveda”. I can promise you that you will get that with this aroma. Stop into Ashka Salon Spa today to pick some up for yourself!

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂
