At Ashka Salon Spa, we donate hair to Children with Hair Loss. Donating hair is a wonderful thing that many people are capable of doing. This gift can truly change someone’s life. We see people of all ages coming in to make the chop! I personally have yet to donate my hair. However, some of the happiest people in my chair have been there after donating 8, 9, or more inches. There is just something about giving back to someone who needs it that makes you feel more grateful than you ever have.

Who is Children With Hair Loss?

Children with Hair Loss was founded in September of 2000. They had done research and found that no companies were giving free hair to children who needed it. They wanted to give all children with medically-related hair loss a chance to feel whole again. Originally this company was focused on children with cancer, but they quickly realized that there are more reasons why children lose their hair than that. Some of these reasons include burns, alopecia, and trichotillomania. They are able to give 300 children a wig every year currently.

What Are The Requirements to Donate to Children With Hair Loss?

If you are considering donating your hair, there are a few requirements that need to be followed for it to be possible. The hair must be at least 8 inches long. When you come in for your haircut, your stylist will measure out the length of your hair. At Ashka Salon Spa, we will send in your donation for you. When we send it, it must be washed, dried, and ponytailed. It needs to have a ponytail on each end. Non-chemically treated hair is preferred, but they will take any hair as long it is in good condition. Gray hair is accepted.

Healthy Hair – A New Year Resolution

Every one wants to have pretty, healthy hair. And every new year, people give them selves a resolution. This year, Ashka Salon Spa is challenging you to resolve to have healthy hair!

What is Hair, Healthy Hair or Not?

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. It has three layers. They are the cuticle, the medulla, and the cortex. The cuticle is the outer most layer. It has flaps on it almost like shingles on a roof. These shingles raise and lower depending on the condition of the hair. Hair condition is typically determined by the condition of the cuticle. The cortex is the the middle layer of the hair. The medulla is inner most layer of the hair shaft.

What Does it Mean to Have Healthy Hair?

Healthy hair is strong. Hair is able to stretch up to 30% of it’s length. To keep it strong, you should avoid brushing while your hair is wet. Use a wide tooth comb and AVEDA’s Brilliant Damage Control to gently detangle your hair. When you heat style your hair, turn down the temperature. Be sure to use a heat protectant every time you style. It is also important to clean your styling tools with alcohol once a week to get rid of product build up. That excess product build up can make your hair brittle by searing into your hair.

Healthy hair is shiny. Hair appears shiny when the cuticle layer is laying down. This way light can bounce off of the hair strand easier. When your hair is wet, the cuticle “shingles” lift easier. When you towel dry your hair, be gentle. Pat dry starting at the roots and moving down the hair shaft. Using a boar bristle brush also can help add extra shine to your locks.

Healthy hair is soft. You should condition each time your hair is wet to lock in the moisture. Use a hair masque such as Damage Remedy or Dry Remedy once a week.

It is important to get regular haircuts in order to keep your ends from splitting. Some people say, “Getting you hair cut makes your hair grow faster”. While this isn’t true, it does help you hair grow longer, stronger.

Rock For Jobs

I had the honor of spending Sunday afternoon with Steve, Lisa, and Jozie in Downtown Detroit. Because of the hard work Ashka put in to raise $20,065 dollars for Goodwill Industries last October, we were invited to the charity concert, “Rock For Jobs” that Goodwill puts on every year. This year the concert was at Sound Board at Motor City Casino, and Bret Michaels was the headliner! Yes, Bret Michaels from the band Poison, and also the star of one of my guilty pleasure shows “Rock Of Love.” Bret spent all afternoon Sunday visiting different Goodwill locations in Metro Detroit. He really is just a big rock of love, isn’t he? Aside from playing a free charity concert, he also donated $10,000 to Goodwill!

It was really neat to see our logo on the sponsor board, hanging out amongst the likes of the Detroit Lions, Meijer, and Pepsi! It was a proud moment for us.

Give back month 2014 will be here before we know it and you bet we will try to top our 2013 achievements. Cheers to you for supporting Ashka and allowing us to support Goodwill!
