Great Haircuts For Women

What makes a great woman’s haircut? You want to feel your best, and your hair makes up a big part of how you feel about yourself. I think everyone would agree that having great hair stylist is important. It’s also noteworthy to identify the components that go into what the right haircut may be for you. Elements such as your face shape, hair texture, hair density, hair color and lifestyle all come into play when finding a great woman’s haircut.

What’s The Shape Of Things?

We are all looking for balance; balance in our lives, our health, and our nutrition to name a few. A hairstyle that compliments your face shape will achieve balance. When regarding your face shape the idea is to create a visual perception of evenness. The “ideal face shape” or face shape that requires the least amount of effort to achieve equilibrium, is an oval shape.
One example might be, someone having an oblong face shape requiring some volume on the sides to give that visual symmetry. You may want to choose a haircut that will provide this overall effect.

Texture Prevails!

What do we mean when we say hair texture? Is it the amount of curl or straightness what we’re talking about? Could it be how thick each hair strand is in circumference? The answer is yes to both of these! The amount of wave is a key component in determining your hair texture. Wavy, straight, curly and, tight curly hair would all be descriptors of hair texture. Additionally, fine hair would be hair that is smaller in circumference; coarse hair has a larger circumference. Therefore, some ways to describe hair texture could be fine wavy hair, coarse straight hair, medium tight curl hair…you get the idea. Your haircut should work with your hair texture and not against it.

What Is Your Density?

Density refers to how many hair strands in a given area. Thin hair means there would be fewer hair follicles per square inch than normal. Conversely, thick hair would have more hair follicles than normal. What is normal hair density you ask? The average person has 2,200 hairs per square inch. Counting the follicles in a given square inch could be a daunting task, so there tends to be a subjective analysis applied when identifying density. Your hair professional at Ashka Salon can give you an experienced opinion of your density.

Live In Your Dimension!

When considering a haircut it may be important to understand the visual impact of your hair color. There are a few elements at play here; length, layering, the dynamic of positive and negative space with your hair color. Do you have highlights, balayage, or special effects hair color? If so, you may want to contemplate the placement of the weight in your haircut.
There is a dimension created with the placement of color and weight, and as you move your head, this dynamic also moves and changes. As an example of this, let’s say you want lots of fun fashion colors placed throughout your hair. If your air is cut to one length, you will only see the colors that are toward the top, as the hair on top covers the rest. A woman’s haircut with some moderate layering would bring more of that color to the surface.

Your Lifestyle And Women’s Haircut Trends.

Let’s face it, the number of choices to consider when it comes to women’s haircuts can seem overwhelming. Doing a little research using the components covered in this article evaluating your desired look considering: face shape, texture, dimension color, and density could get you and your hairstylist to that perfect haircut for you much sooner.

Finally, something to ruminate on is your lifestyle. Do you climb mountains or do spend your time in a board room landing that next big account? These are extreme examples of course, but the concept should still remain. You may love a sweeping bang, but find that it gets in your eyes as you are feeding your newborn baby. Picking the right haircut for a woman should be expressive of your personality and align with your career, family, and life choices.
Following trends can give inspiration and it gives us the opportunity to take an idea and make it work for us. Be unique and be yourself!

Best Haircuts For Men In Canton & South Lyon

Haircuts For Men Canton and South Lyon

Great Haircuts For Men

Men’s Haircuts are more a thing than they’ve ever been! Today’s man is fashion-forward and conscientious. A great haircut isn’t just about your hair or who cuts it. It’s important for you as a guest to understand what you’re working with. In this article, we will cover many considerations to understand to decide what the best haircuts for men are. Some elements that you should consider and discuss with your hair stylist are:

What Is Your Hair Texture?

Is your hair coarse, fine, curly, straight? When we talk about the texture of your hair, you should consider the circumference of each hair strand. A hair strand with more circumference is considered “coarse” and a strand with less circumference is “fine,” you get the idea.

In addition, the amount of bend or curl of your hair will affect the volume and movement and be a part of the formula of understanding your hair texture.

Follow Your Density!

Every person’s hair has a certain density of growth. To demonstrate, we could look at how many hair follicles per square inch in a given area of the scalp. If you have more hair follicles in that area your hair could be called “thick.” Likewise, if you have less hair follicles in that same space your hair may be called “thin.”

If your now asking, “what’s the number of follicles per square inch to be considered thick?” There’s no simple answer to that as it can be an entirely subjective answer. The purpose of understanding your density is to have a solid grasp of the concept and term for discussion with your stylist. To summarize, as an example a person can have “fine” (small circumference) but “thick” (dense follicles) hair. Fine+Thick Hair. Obviously each individual has their own make up of components unique to them.

What Is Your Face Shape?

Some shapes describing your face include round, oval, square, diamond, heart and triangle to name a few. The goal is to find balance; therefore using your hairstyle as a way to add to balance, or offset any imbalance. As an example, a person with a triangular or pyramid face shape may want some volume on top to even things up a bit.

What Is Your Lifestyle?

In the process of determining what’s the best men’s haircut for you; we must consider your lifestyle.
Do you work in a corporate environment or at a tattoo studio? Are you a wash and go kinda guy or do you wield that blow dryer like a pro?
If a blow dryer makes you want to run for the hills, it’s not a good idea to choose a coifed look that requires a lot of styling with tools. However, you could always learn how to use certain tools to achieve the look of the haircut you choose.

Trends and Haircuts For Men

These days there are lots of options to personalize your style. In other words, you can add details that are unique to your look, such as how your hairline is finished or lines/patterns cut into your haircut. Coupled with your style, checking out trends can give an added freshness to how your haircut suits you. Firstly, look into some resources that do much of the work for you, such as these articles: Esquire Style Trends. Secondly, think of haircuts for men that have made you take notice, certainly to act as a fulcrum of inspiration.

What’s A Fade?

When talking about haircuts for men, it is notable to discuss the term “fade.” A fade is a term that has been used generally to describe hair that is cut short going from shortest at the hairline and gradually getting longer as it “fades” up. However, the length of this transition can vary with each hairstyle individually. Your hair stylist may choose to use adjustable clippers or scissors and a comb to achieve a balanced fade…there are many paths to the same destination.

Find your Pot of Gold at Ashka Salon- Golden Hair that is!

Golden Hair

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and I know I’ve got my eye out for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. One place to get your hands on some “treasure” is at Ashka Salon. For years, all that I ever was asked for was ash tones, or white blonde hair. I finally am seeing the trend pendulum swing back over to a slightly more natural blonde color. Golden hair is being asked for more and more in my chair. In comparison to the more cool tones, golden hair tends to have a little more shine to it. It has a little more depth to it and often appears healthier because your hair doesn’t need to be lightened as much to achieve that color.

There is a difference between Golden Hair and Brassy Hair!

Golden Hair
In this before and after by Guy Tang, you can easily see the difference between brass and warmth.

I believe a lot of people often ask for “cool toned hair” because if they ask for something other than that they are afraid of being “orange”. However there is a HUGE difference between being brassy and having a finished gold hue. When you are lightening hair, it gradually exposes something called Natural Remaining Pigment. This pigment is ALWAYS warm. It often looks very raw, or unfinished, and would definitely fall into the “brassy” category for most. However, when your hair is finished with one of Aveda’s Demi Plus glosses, it refines the warm making it look purposeful.

In my honest opinion, I have been loving adding a little warmth to my blondes because it tends to help add the shine that most blondes are missing. One of the Stylists at Ashka Salon Spa in Canton, Alaina, recently shared with me a golden hair color secret.

I love adding just a pinch of light copper to my warm blondes! It seems to give them just enough warmth, without being overboard!

Texture Tonic at Ashka Salon Spa

Texture Tonic

The epitome of my esthetic lately has to become to be as “beachy” as possible. I love having a warm summer glow to my skin, minimal makeup, and tousled hair.  I don’t know what it is about it, but I just can not get enough of that vibe. I have been craving for Aveda to come out with some sort of sea salt spray for the longest time and they finally did. Introducing Aveda’s Texture Tonic! I have been loving this product. And it is the perfect finishing touch to my beach babe style that I am constantly trying to achieve.

What is Aveda’s Texture Tonic?

Texture Tonic

Texture Tonic is Aveda’s version of a sea salt spray with a twist. Sea Salt spray is meant to give your hair more texture and add an addition wave or curl to your hair. Traditional sea salt sprays can be very drying to your hair. The salt tends to suck up any moisture it can. Aveda wanted to make a spray that gives you the effect of sea salt spray, without the harsh drying effect. That is when they decided to add sugar to their formula!

Cane sugar and salt work in harmony to help create naturally tousled texture and flexible hold, while leaving the hair touchable and infused with natural shine for an effortlessly “undone” look. The ingredient babassu helps create effortless texture.

Texture Tonic can be used on dry or wet hair. My personal favorite ways to apply it is after showering, I let my hair air dry about 50%. I then flip upside down and spray about 3-4 sprays of texture tonic. Scrunching it into my hair, I instantly see my waves begin to bounce up. Another way I like to use it is after my hair is dry and curled, I will spray in a couple spritz to make it “perfectly messy”.

If this sounds like the product for you, stop by Ashka Salon Spa today to pick yours up! One of the girls would be happy to demonstrate how it works for you.

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂

How is Our Natural Hair Products Made?

Natural Hair Products

Something I take great pride in is the fact that I work Aveda products. Aveda’s core values and mission statement aligns with my personal beliefs. It makes me so happy that I am able to represent such amazing products. Aveda makes, in my opinion, the best natural hair products on the market. I was curious about exactly how they go about making them. I did some research and thought it would be fun to share what I found!

How It’s Made: Natural Hair Products

Natural Hair Products
Natural Hair Products

Aveda is the first beauty company to be manufacturing with 100% wind power. Aveda also only uses sustainable ingredients in their products. We source a lot of our ingredients from different countries with different plants. Because we do need certain plants to be able to create our products, if there is a natural disaster in the area that we source from, it can cause Aveda’s production to be put on hold. An example of an ingredient sourced from another country is Brazillian Uruku. It is used in a lot of Aveda’s makeup now.

Aveda finds it really important to celebrate the different cultures from which we source ingredients. You can find multiple “Aveda sourcing stories” on Youtube!

Finally, all of Aveda’s packaging is recyclable! This is just one of the many ways Aveda tries to minimize their carbon footprint. It is nice knowing that I can recycle all of my beauty products rather than it just piling up in our landfills.

Afte reading this, I hope you choose to join me in supporting a company whose main goal is to support our environment. Stop into Ashka Salon Spa today to get your hands on some of the next natural hair products on the market. I know you will love them as much as I do.

Bright and Pastel Hair Color

Bright and Pastel Hair Color by Ian Michael Black

Green. Blue. Purple. Pink. More and more people are adventuring into the world of fun hair color these days. I had the pleasure of attending another class with Aveda’s Global Artistic Director of Hair Color, Ian Michael Black. It was called Kinetic Color and it talked all about how to achieve bright or pastel hair color. These types of colors can sometimes be daunting. I was so excited to learn about how to guarantee my formulas to turn out the way I was expecting them too. With his expertise, I learned how much of what to add to ensure bright or pastel hair color results.

How to Achieve Bright or Pastel Hair Color

The first thing that needs to happen when you want to attempt bright or pastel hair color, is that the hair needs to be lightened to basically a white blonde. I like to think about it as if we were painting on a canvas. Bright pink is going to show up A LOT better on a white canvas than it would a brown. This typically means that you need to bleach the hair to achieve that white canvas. This sometimes takes multiple applications and is best done over time to ensure the integrity of your hair.

Once you are there, that is where the fun begins! We then get to paint on whatever color you desire! Maintenance when you have bright or pastel hair color is kind of high. They tend to fade fast so it is super important to use a color safe shampoo. I recommend using Aveda’s Damage Remedy Line when at all possible during to the extensive bleaching process that is typically necessary.

Have you always been curious about getting a fun color in your hair? Call Ashka Salon Spa today to book an appointment with one of our amazing stylists!

Lash Lifting and Tinting at Ashka Salon Spa

Lash Lifting and Semi Permanent Mascara

Eyelash Extensions have been all the rage lately. With so much focus on how our lashes are looking, many people who don’t want to deal with the maintenance that comes with eyelash extensions have been looking for alternatives to getting those lashes they dream about. We have been doing Lash Lifting and Tinting at Ashka Salon Spa for a while now! Madison has been trained and worked tirelessly to perfect her craft.

When Madison was training, I was one of her models! I have had eyelash extensions in the past, and while I LOVED them on vacation, they just are not for my everyday lifestyle. I was eager to try out this new service and see how I liked it. As soon as I got done with my lash lift and tint, I instantly fell in love. While the results were subtle, when I applied mascara I could tell a huge difference in how curled my lashes were. I would recommend this service to anyone who is scared to try eyelash extensions because of the commitment to them.

Lash Lifting and Semi Permanent Mascara
Lash Lifting and Semi-Permanent Mascara

I Interviewed Madison on Lash Lifting and Tinting!

I asked Madison a few questions about Lash Lifting and Tinting to get the inside scoop about everything!

Question #1: How did you know you wanted to learn lash lifting and tinting?

When Jozie [the manager] first presented the opportunity for me to learn Lash Lifting and Semi Permanent Mascara, I knew instantly that I wanted to do it! Eyelashes are a huge focal point on the face. It’s a feature that opens your eyes, making them seem larger and brighter. Eyelashes are my personal favorite feature on the face, so being able to work hands on with natural lashes definitely excited me!

Question #2: What are the most important things to remember when getting this service?

The most important thing to remember about Lash Lifting and Semi Permanent Mascara is that with the service, it is working with your natural lash. There is no additional length or volume added. The curl is done strictly with the natural length of the client’s eyelashes. With doing this service, it is very important for the client to take care of their lashes!

The Interview Continues…

Question #3: What makes a good lash lift and tint candidate?

A good candidate for Lash Lifting and Semi Permanent Mascara is someone who likes a very natural look. Since this service works with their natural lash, it is great for people who are a little bit more low maintence with their appearance. It is great for those who prefer to wear less make up and people who don’t spend that much time in the morning getting ready. This is also a great service for those who already have a busy schedule and spending time on themselves in the morning is usually very minimal.

Question #4: Can you break down the process of a lash lift and tint?

There’s a couple of steps to doing a Lash Lift and Semi Permanent Mascara application. It’s a process that usually takes around 45 minutes to achieve. The Lash Lift is the first thing you do. While the client is laying down with their eyes closed, I will measure the length of their lashes to find the perfect silicone rod for the curl. once the lashes are fitted to the rod, I will apply the solutuon. I then apply a neutralizer. After both steps, I then cleanse the eyes to reveal a beautiful set of curled lashes! From there I prep the lashes for the tint. Using customized tint for each client, it will then be applied. After that, the lashes are cleansed one last time to reveal the final look.

Hopefully, you learned more about our Lash Lifting and Tint from reading this blog! If it sounds like you would like this, call the salon today to set up your appointment!

Until Next Time,
Josie 🙂

Self Care

Self care has been a huge topic of thought for me lately. As I have gotten older, I have realized the importance of self care. You cannot give, if your basket is empty. Ashka Salon Spa believes this as well, and we are happy to provide a space that you can focus on that self care. Misty actually just gave me a Fifty-Minute Tulasara Facial Treatment today and I am always amazed at how much that deep cleansing makes me feel better. An hour of peace and quiet, while a trained esthetician takes care of my skin, is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Last week, I was giving my guest an 80 minute pedicure. This service includes a Paraffin Foot Dip. We both agreed that we love the difference the paraffin makes when it comes to moisturizing our skin. My skin personally has been so dry this winter. I know I can use any bit of moisture that I can get.

Aveda‘s New Shine Treatment is amazing! It came out recently and I have been loving adding it to any guest who is interested in it. My hair has never looked or felt better since I’ve been using it on my own head as well!

3 Favorite Hair Brightening Techniques

Hair Brightening

Spring break is approaching quickly and it’s that time of year that everyone is itching to go a little bit lighter with their hair color. I even just got a full head of babylights put in my hair by Jessie to make me feel sunkissed and push me through the last of our grey days here in Michigan. There are so many hair brightening techniques now a days. Keep reading to hear my top 3 favorites that I like to use on my guests!

My 3 Favorite Hair Brightening Techniques

  1. Babylights and Tipping Out:

    Hair Brightening
Hair Brightening Technique: Babylights and Tipping Out

Babylights are similar to traditional highlights in the way that that come all the way to the root. The difference is though that they are extremely “baby” fine weaves. This gives the hair an almost shimmery effect. I have been loving the way this changes peoples look subtly but enough to give them a pop of color. I often find myself pairing this technique with tipping out. This is when your stylist back combs the ends of your hair and applies the color just to the ends. This gives you a lived in look with brighter ends.

  2. Eclipting:

    Hair Brightening
    Hair Brightening Technique: Eclipting

Eclipting is Aveda’s trademarked hair coloring technique that they created in 2016. It is a way of seamlessly blending a root color with lightened pieces for the ends. It requires two colors at least and is done by twisting the hair. When I do this techniques, I will often put foils on the ends of my twists to ensure there is a little more lift there.

  3. Balayage:

    Hair Brightening
    Hair Brightening Technique: Balayage

I feel like I have talked about Balayage endlessly on this blog so I will keep this concise. Balayage is going to give you the softest, most natural brightening out of all of this techniques. I think balayage is perfect for people who have never colored their hair before because it is processed in open air without foils. Foils give guests additional levels of lift because it traps in the heat from the reaction.

Even though it is typical that people want hair brightening techniques for the spring and summer, remember it is your hair! There are no rules of what is right or wrong. If you like your hair black as night, keep it that way! However, if you’re looking for something to change it up a bit, I hope one of these techniques peak your interest!

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂

Fifty Shades of (Artificial) Grey: Grey Hair Color

Grey Hair Color

If you have spent anytime on Pinterest or Instagram in the past year, I’m sure you have see the grey/silver hair trend that is going around. Some people find it funny that people are paying to get grey hair when if you wait long enough, you’ll inevitably get it. Other people find it absolutely stunning. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, people are definitely asking for grey hair color.

Getting Grey Hair Color – The Process

Grey Hair Color
Grey Hair Color

Unfortunately it is not as easy as simply squeezing grey out of a color tube and putting it on someones head. In order to achieve a true silver/grey hair color you have to get the hair to be essentially white blonde first. Either through highlights or bleaching the hair out, the hair has to be lifted as light as possible. After you have achieved that, your stylist then will have to apply a gloss over top of it to give it that “grey” hue.

I think the hardest part about artificial grey hair is that once you have lifted the hair light enough, it becomes porous and the “grey” doesn’t want to stay in the hair well. This is the same struggle that all fashion colors have. In order to keep that grey/silver hue, you have to be very diligent with your at home hair care. Even then, it sometimes will still just fade quick due to the nature of the color.

Blending Grey Hair with Artificial Grey Hair Color

I’ve had a few clients come in and ask me questions about growing out their grey hair. They want to know if we can just dye their hair grey so that it is easier to grow out. In this case, I suggest doing highlights of really light white, silvery blonde, and lowlights of a dark greyish tone. This over all will blend together to create a cool toned base that sometimes makes the growing out process easier. However at the end of the day, it is impossible to identically replicate someone’s natural grey hair. It helps to blend it, but you still have to go through the long process of growing it out.

If any of this peaks your interest, you should call the salon today! I know the girls on our team would LOVE to help you achieve your grey hair color dreams.

Until Next Time,

Josie 🙂
